Rosana Escobar (b. 1991) is a Colombian artist and designer whose work with plant-based fibers takes shape through sculpture, wearable forms, and collaborative experiences. With a background in biology from Universidad de los Andes and design from Design Academy Eindhoven, her practice is grounded in research, craft, and material exploration.
She begins by studying the fiber’s natural properties—its texture, cycles, and relation to a place—and traces how it has been shaped by agricultural, industrial, and cultural systems. Her research includes conversations with growers and makers, field visits, and studio-based experimentation. This process allows her to work in dialogue with the material, understanding how it behaves and what it can become.
Escobar works with the fiber as a versatile collaborator, letting its qualities shape and at times redirect the process. She combines traditional craft techniques with adapted industrial systems, adjusting them to suit what each material requires. This reciprocity allows the material to influence the outcome, opening pathways to new or overlooked possibilities.
Her work is marked by a high level of craftsmanship and a strong material presence. Each piece reflects the process of its making and the relationship formed between maker, fiber, and form. Through this practice, she explores how materials can create a more reciprocal understanding of connection, labor, and design, making reciprocity a defining element of her approach
